How Does Panel Efficiency Actually Work?

Panel efficiency shows how much sunlight a solar panel converts into electricity. Higher efficiency can produce more power from limited roof space.

For homes, efficiency matters most when roof space is limited. With enough roof space, overall system size and value can be more important.

Panels with a lower temperature coefficient generally maintain more output in hot conditions.

Worked example

A 32m² north-facing roof

Aiko Solar Panels at 24.2%

15 panels × 470W = 7.05kW — highest output the roof can physically hold.

Canadian Solar Panels at 22.5%

14 panels × 450W = 6.30kW — around 11% less, at a noticeably lower price.

If the roof isn’t full, spend the difference on more panels. If it is full, spend it on better ones.

Solar Panel Brand FAQs

It depends on your roof. Aiko is our choice for high efficiency, REC for hot-weather performance, Canadian Solar for value, and Jinko as a reliable all-round option for homes.

A 25-year warranty is only as good as the company behind it and the installer who helps with the claim. These five brands offer reliable warranty support and products we trust. We’d rather know five products properly than list forty.

On a small, shaded or complex roof, yes when you can’t fit more panels, higher efficiency can make a difference. On a large, clear roof, a larger mid-tier system may offer better value and generate more electricity over its lifetime.

N-type panels generally offer lower degradation and better performance in low-light and high-temperature conditions than older P-type PERC panels. Every panel we install is N-type or HJT we no longer use P-type panels for residential solar systems.

A 6.6kW system typically uses 14 × 470W panels or 15 × 440W panels. Most installations need around 30–34m² of suitable roof space, depending on panel size and layout.

No. The rebate is calculated on system size and your postcode zone, not the brand all five are CEC-approved. See our solar rebate page for current WA figures.

We do. You contact John, we handle the claim with the manufacturer and arrange the replacement. Our 10-year workmanship warranty covers the installation in addition to the panel manufacturer’s warranty.
